A good corporate gift is one the person keeps and uses where other people can see it. Choose it in this order: who it is for, what they are allowed to accept, your budget for each person, and the date it must arrive. This guide gives ideas for each kind of recipient at three budgets, with the South African tax and gift policy rules that most lists leave out.
Four Questions Before You Choose
We have all received the pen and the diary. They are polite. By February they are in a drawer. Answer these four questions first and your gift will not join them.
- Who is it for? A client you see twice a year needs a different gift from the team you work beside every day.
- What may they accept? Many companies, and every public body, have a gift policy. Ask before you choose.
- What is your budget for each person? Decide the amount first. It rules out most of the catalogue and makes the choice easier.
- When must it arrive? Anything made to order or personalised takes weeks. Year-end gifts are ordered in October.
Corporate Gift Ideas by Recipient
| Who it is for | Ideas that work | Leave out |
|---|---|---|
| Clients | A hamper the whole office can share. A book you chose for that person. A leather piece with their initials | Anything where your logo is larger than their name |
| Executives and board members | One piece of real quality: a leather bag, a fountain pen, a bottle from a year that matters to them | Gadgets that are out of date within a year |
| A whole team or department | The same item for everyone, in each person’s size or with their initials: a leather belt, a jacket, a voucher they spend themselves | Guessed sizes. Alcohol for everyone |
| Top performers and long service | A gift a level above the team gift, handed over in person: shoes, a bag, a weekend away | The same gift everyone else received |
| Someone retiring | One piece of real quality with their initials and years of service, and a letter signed by the team | A gift with next year’s company slogan on it |
One rule runs through every row. The gift should say you know who the person is. A name or a set of initials does that. A catalogue item with a logo does the opposite.
Ideas at Three Budgets
Under R500 a person
Give something that gets used up, and write the card by hand. Good coffee, rooibos, biltong, chocolate or a book. At this budget, leave the logo off. A cheap object with a logo on it is the gift people forget.
R500 to R3,500 a person
Give one useful thing of real quality. A hamper from a good delicatessen, a notebook and pen worth keeping, a restaurant voucher, or a leather belt in each person’s size. Our belts start at R3,500.
R3,500 and above
Give one piece the person will carry or wear for years, and put their initials on it. Leather loafers at R3,500, a leather backpack from R14,150, or a Zulu Treasure backpack in Nguni hide at R22,150, where no two are alike.
What Corporate Gifts Can a Person Wear?
Corporate gifts a person can wear include socks, a scarf, a cap, a belt, a jacket and a pair of shoes, and the last three need the person’s size.
I think a wrong size is the most visible mistake in this category, so look first at the items that need none. Each band is what you plan to spend on one person.
| Planned spend per person | Ideas to wear | Size needed |
|---|---|---|
| Under R500 | Wool socks, a knitted beanie for winter, a plain cap | No |
| R500 to R1,500 | A wool or cotton scarf, a silk pocket square, leather gloves | For gloves only |
| R1,500 to R3,500 | A knitted jersey, or a rain jacket for a team that works outdoors | Yes |
| R3,500 to R10,000 | A leather belt made to the person’s measurement, leather shoes, a jacket | Yes |
| Above R10,000 | A coat or a suit fitted by a tailor, given as an appointment the person books | Taken by the tailor |
For a belt, ask for the waist in centimetres and not a trouser size. For shoes, ask which size the person wears in a formal shoe. Write down what each person tells you.
Choose plain colours, and keep the company colours for the card. At the two highest bands you are choosing one piece for one person, and our article on luxury corporate gifts sets out what to find out about them first.
What Corporate Gifts Can a Person Carry?
Corporate gifts a person can carry include a card holder, a notebook cover, a laptop sleeve, an umbrella, a travel wallet and a bag.
A carried gift is used outside the office, where other people see it. For that reason I think the standard of the object counts for more here than in any other category. Match it to how the person travels.
- Under R500. A luggage tag, a reusable coffee cup, a cotton tote for the weekend market.
- R500 to R1,500. A card holder, a full-size umbrella, a steel water bottle, a toiletry bag.
- R1,500 to R3,500. A leather wallet, a laptop sleeve, a cover for a notebook or a passport.
- R3,500 to R10,000. A weekend bag, a leather folio for documents, a leather case for cables and chargers.
- Above R10,000. A leather laptop bag or backpack, or a cabin suitcase for someone who flies for work each month.
Before you order a bag for anyone, find out the size of the laptop they carry. A folio or a sleeve suits a person who drives to work. For someone who walks or takes the train, I would choose a bag with two straps.

What Are Good Corporate Gifts for the Desk?
Good corporate gifts for the desk are the ones a person handles every working day: a notebook, a pen, a desk mat, a lamp or a plant.
The pen and the diary at the top of this page are desk gifts, and they are the ones in a drawer by February. So the test is whether your item is better than the one the person already owns. If it is the same or worse, give something from another category.
| Planned spend per person | Ideas for the desk |
|---|---|
| Under R500 | A notebook with good paper, a pot plant that tolerates office light, a desk calendar by a local illustrator |
| R500 to R1,500 | A refillable pen, or a desk mat in leather or wool felt |
| R1,500 to R3,500 | A desk lamp, a tray and pen pot in wood or leather, a framed print |
| R3,500 to R10,000 | A fountain pen, a desk clock, an original work by a local artist |
| Above R10,000 | An office chair chosen with the person, or an artwork commissioned for their office |
This page already advises against gadgets that are out of date within a year. I would apply that to chargers, speakers and phone stands as well, which the person’s own employer may already supply.
If you plan to put a logo on a desk item, our article on branded corporate gifts sets out where a mark belongs and how each method of applying it works.
What Food and Drink Make Good Corporate Gifts?
The food and drink that make good corporate gifts keep without a fridge, can be shared, and suit what the person eats and drinks.
Ask about diet before you order. Send a short message to the person or their assistant, asking whether anyone avoids alcohol, meat, nuts, gluten or sugar, and whether the food should be halal or kosher.
| Planned spend per person | Ideas to eat and drink | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Under R500 | A jar of honey, a box of rusks, or the coffee, rooibos, biltong and chocolate named in the budget section above | Chocolate in summer heat, and biltong for a person who eats no meat |
| R500 to R1,500 | A box of dried fruit and nuts, olive oil, a selection of teas | Nut allergies |
| R1,500 to R3,500 | A hamper for an office to share, a case of drinks without alcohol, a cheese selection delivered by hand | Anything that needs a fridge |
| R3,500 to R10,000 | A tasting led by a producer, or a year of monthly coffee deliveries | Dates when the office is closed |
I give no idea above R10,000 here. At that amount I think the money is better spent on something the person keeps.
Alcohol needs a yes from the person first. Where you are unsure, send the version without it.
What Corporate Gifts Suit the Home?
Corporate gifts that suit the home are plain, useful objects for the kitchen, the table or the garden, and I would keep them for people you know well.
A gift for the home enters someone’s private space. I would send one only where you have worked with the person for a year or more, or where the team works at home and the house is also the office.
- Under R500. A candle with a mild scent, a pair of linen tea towels, seeds or bulbs for the garden.
- R500 to R1,500. A wooden serving board, a cookbook, a ceramic bowl from a local studio.
- R1,500 to R3,500. A wool throw, a set of glasses, braai tools in a case.
- R3,500 to R10,000. A cast-iron pot, a set of table linen, a good kitchen knife with its board.
- Above R10,000. A chair or a side table from a local workshop, chosen with the person.
You cannot see the room the gift will stand in, so keep to natural materials and plain colours. Leave out heavy scent, wall art for someone whose taste you do not know, and anything that needs assembly.
Are Experiences Good Corporate Gifts?
Yes, an experience is a good corporate gift when the person can choose the date and bring someone with them.
An experience leaves nothing to store, which suits a person who already owns what they need. It fails when it expires before they can use it, or when it takes place far from where they live.
- Under R500. Two cinema tickets, a coffee tasting, entry to a garden or a museum.
- R500 to R1,500. A pottery or cooking class for the person and a guest.
- R1,500 to R3,500. Dinner for two near the person’s home, a spa morning, tickets to a concert or a match.
- R3,500 to R10,000. A night away for two, or a day’s course in something the person has said they want to learn.
- Above R10,000. A weekend away, or travel to an event in the person’s field.
Before you pay, check how long the booking stays valid, whether the date can be moved, and who to call if the venue closes. For a team, hold the experience during working hours, so that nobody gives up an evening to receive a gift.
Searches for corporate gifts in South Africa were highest in October and November 2025, at 4,400 a month, and lowest in December 2025, at 1,600.

Can a Donation Be a Corporate Gift?
Yes, a donation made in a person’s name can be a corporate gift, and it suits a recipient who has asked for nothing or whose employer limits what they may accept.
Ask first whether the person’s gift policy treats a donation as a gift, and do not assume that it is exempt. Then handle it in this order.
- Offer the person a short list of registered organisations and let them choose. A cause you picked for them may not be theirs.
- Leave out political parties and religious bodies unless the person names one.
- Give in the person’s name and not your company’s, and ask the organisation for a letter addressed to them.
- Send that letter with a handwritten card. Leave the amount off the card.
- Keep the donation out of your own marketing unless the person agrees.
A donation is a poor substitute where a team expects something to hold. For your own staff, my advice is to let each person choose between the gift and the donation.
What Digital Gifts Can a Company Send?
A company can send a subscription, an online course, a credit for an e-book or an audiobook, or a voucher delivered by email.
I would use a digital gift where a courier cannot reach the person in time: staff in other countries, a team that works at home, a guest you thank the morning after an event.
| Planned spend per person | Digital ideas |
|---|---|
| Under R500 | A credit for an e-book or an audiobook, or a month of a music or reading service |
| R500 to R1,500 | A voucher for a bookshop or a food delivery, or three months of a fitness or language app |
| R1,500 to R3,500 | A year’s subscription to a publication in the person’s field, or a short online course |
| R3,500 to R10,000 | A place on a longer course with a certificate, or a year of a learning service |
Before you buy, confirm that the service works in the person’s country and on the device they use. Find out whether a subscription renews at their cost when your gift ends, and either cancel the renewal yourself or tell them the date.
In my view an email with a code is slight on its own. Add a card by post, or a personal message from the colleague who knows them, timed for the same day. For your own staff, read the tax section further down this page before you choose a voucher.
What Do You Give New Joiners, Remote Teams, Speakers and Event Guests?
Give a new joiner something for the first day, a remote team something that reaches every address in the same week, a speaker something small enough to travel home, and an event guest one item in place of a bag of branded ones.
| Who it is for | Ideas | My advice |
|---|---|---|
| A new joiner | Something from the desk section above, with a welcome card signed by the people they will work with | Have it on the desk before they arrive |
| A remote team | A digital gift, or a food box sent to each home | Ask each person for a delivery address and do not rely on the one on file |
| Speakers | A book, a small item made in your city, a donation in their name | Keep it small and flat, so that it fits in hand luggage |
| Event guests | One item to eat or drink at each seat, or a single gift sent the week after | Send nothing they must carry around the venue |
| Contractors and freelancers | The same gift your staff receive | Include them on the day the team gift is handed out |
Other recipients have articles of their own. Corporate gifts for clients covers new clients, long-standing clients and how to thank someone for a referral, and corporate gifts for employees deals with your own staff.
For a director or a board member, see executive corporate gifts. For someone leaving after long service, see corporate retirement gifts.
Which Occasions at Work Call for a Gift?
The occasions at work that call for a gift are a work anniversary, a promotion and the end of a project, and you may also choose to mark Women’s Day and Heritage Day.
| Occasion | Idea | When to give it |
|---|---|---|
| A work anniversary | A gift that rises with the years served, with a letter from the person’s manager | In the week of the date, and not at year end |
| A promotion | One item for the new role: a folio or a bag | On the day it is announced |
| A project finished | A meal for everyone who worked on it, and the same small gift for each | Within two weeks of delivery |
| Women’s Day | A gift chosen by asking the women on the team what they would like | Ask a month ahead |
| Heritage Day | A meal to which each person brings a dish, or food from a local producer for the team to share | On a working day close to it |
I would choose a few of these and keep to them every year. In my view it is worse to mark one person’s promotion and miss the next than to mark none.
Year end has its own article. Year-end corporate gifts gives a planning timeline, the order dates and what to give suppliers and the board.

Tax and Gift Policies in South Africa
Most lists of gift ideas stop at the ideas. In South Africa two rules decide whether your gift is welcome.
Gifts to your own staff are usually taxed
SARS treats an asset an employer gives to an employee as a taxable fringe benefit, and a gift voucher is treated the same way. A long service award of up to R16,000 in a tax year is not taxed after 15 unbroken years with the same employer, according to the SARS guide for employers on fringe benefits of April 2026. Sage sets this out in its guide to tax on year-end gifts. Speak to your payroll team before you order, because the figures change and this is general information, not tax advice.
Your client may have to declare your gift
Many companies ask staff to record every gift in a register, and some set a limit on its value. Public bodies are stricter. So ask your contact, or their assistant, what they may accept. Nobody is offended by the question. And do not send a gift to anyone who is deciding on a tender or a contract with you at the time.
When to Order
Order year-end gifts by the middle of October. Anything made to order or personalised needs weeks, and couriers slow down from the middle of December. For any supplier, ask for the lead time in writing before you pay.
Our own pieces are made to order and need two months from the day you approve the order, for up to 50 pieces.
| You want the gifts by | Approve your order by |
|---|---|
| 15 December 2026, for year-end functions | 15 October 2026 |
| 1 February 2027, to open the new year | 1 December 2026 |
| Any other date | Count back two months |
Their Name Before Your Logo
Put the person’s initials where they can be seen and your logo where it is found later, inside or underneath. A gift marked this way gets carried into the next meeting.
On our pieces a logo is applied by debossing, foil embossing or laser engraving. You approve a digital proof before production begins. From five pieces we add a monogram for each person and a gift card in your company’s own words.
What Are Good Corporate Gifts on a Small Budget?
Good corporate gifts on a small budget are one shared treat for the group, a handwritten card for each person, and time.
Under R500 a person, this page suggests something that gets used up. Where the amount is far lower than that, my advice is to stop dividing it.
- Pool the budget. In my view one good lunch for the team is a better use of the money than a small object for each person.
- Give time. An afternoon off costs no cash. Clear it first with whoever approves leave.
- Buy the better version of one thing. A single bar of good chocolate, and not a box of ordinary sweets.
Say nothing about cost on the card, and hand the gift over in person.
How Do You Choose Corporate Gifts for a Large Team?
For a large team, choose one item that needs no size, or one item in a few stated options, and collect every detail on a single list before you order.
- Decide whether everyone receives the same item. I think they should, with long service marked separately on its own date.
- Prefer an item with no size. Where a size is needed, send a form and set a closing date.
- Offer two or three options at most. Where the gift is food, make one of them free of alcohol and meat.
- Keep one list with each person’s name as they spell it, their option, their delivery address and who hands the gift over.
- Get your own company’s approval in writing before you place the order.
- Ask the supplier for one finished sample before the full order is made.
- Order a few spare units for people who join between the order and the handover, and agree how exchanges will work.
- Ask for a delivery date a week before the handover, so that a late parcel does not move the day.
- Plan the handover site by site, so that no office receives its gifts a week after another.
- Record what was given to whom, on which date and at what cost, for next year and for your finance team.
For a larger team I would order earlier. Ask the supplier how the lead time changes with the quantity before you set the handover date.
Which Corporate Gifts Are the More Sustainable Choice?
In my view the more sustainable corporate gift is the one that is used for years or used up completely, and I give this as an opinion without figures.
I think the largest waste in corporate gifting is the item nobody wanted, so I would settle quantity and fit before material.
- Choose something that is consumed, or something that can be repaired.
- Buy from a producer near the recipient where you can, so that the parcel travels a shorter distance.
- Offer an opt-out. A person who wants nothing can say so, and you can give to a cause in their place.
Be careful with claims. If a supplier describes an item as green, ask what the claim rests on, and repeat it to your staff only if you have seen the evidence.
Order quantities, dates printed on the item and packaging are dealt with in our article on whether branded gifts are wasteful.
Which Corporate Gifts Travel Well by Courier?
The corporate gifts I would trust to a courier are flat, light, unbreakable and unaffected by heat: books, textiles, leather goods, stationery and dry food in tins.
| How it travels | Gifts | What I would do |
|---|---|---|
| Travels well | Books, notebooks, scarves, socks, leather goods, tea, coffee, rusks | Box each one so that it cannot move |
| Needs care | Glass, ceramics, bottles, framed prints, plants | Ask the supplier to pack and send it, and to carry the risk of breakage |
| Better by hand | Chocolate in summer, cheese, fresh food, flowers, cake | Deliver it yourself, or use a local same-day service |
| No parcel needed | Subscriptions, courses, donations | Send by email, with a card by post |
Put the card inside the box and a mobile number on the label. Keep the tracking number for each parcel against the person’s name on your list until they confirm that it arrived.

How Do You Narrow a List of Gift Ideas to One?
Narrow a list of gift ideas to one by removing every idea that fails any of six tests, then choosing the plainest of those that remain.
- Reason. You can say in one sentence why this gift is for this person.
- Duplicate. They do not already own a better one.
- Household. It causes no difficulty at home. Think of alcohol, scent, pets and small children.
- Carrying. They can take it home from the office or the event without a car.
- Repeat. You did not give the same thing last year.
- Fairness. You would be comfortable if everyone on the list compared gifts.
Where two ideas still remain, I would take the one with fewer parts.
What Two Organisations Chose
The IT department at Durban University of Technology commissioned 25 pieces from us. The Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency (SEDFA) commissioned 50, one for every member of a department.
Both made the same decision: one piece for each person, the same standard for everyone in the room. If that is the gift you have in mind, our corporate gifts page sets out prices, volume pricing from 15 pieces and how to order.
What Is the Most Popular Corporate Gift?
I know of no reliable count of the most popular corporate gift, and I think popularity is a poor guide to choosing one.
If an item is given everywhere, your recipient may well own several already. I would do the opposite. Start with the person, pick the category on this page that suits how they work and live, and choose one plain item of good quality within your amount.
If you need a safe choice for a wide list, food that can be shared is the one I would pick, in a version without alcohol.
What Are Classy Corporate Gift Ideas?
In my view a classy corporate gift is a single object in a natural material with no visible logo: a wool scarf, a leather card holder, a ceramic bowl or a wooden serving board.
Each is one object and not a box of five, in a plain colour and in a material that is what it appears to be: wool, leather, wood, glass or linen. I would keep the packaging neat and no larger than it needs to be, and sign the card by hand.
Five Mistakes to Avoid
- Ordering in December. The gift arrives in January and the moment has passed.
- Guessing sizes for belts, shoes or clothing. Ask each person, or ask their manager.
- Making your logo the largest thing on the gift.
- Sending a gift without checking the recipient’s gift policy.
- Leaving out the card. Two handwritten lines are what people remember.
More on Corporate Gifts
Corporate Gift Questions, Answered
What’s a good work gift?
Something the person will use every week and would not have bought for themselves. Good coffee, a book chosen for them, a leather belt or a voucher for a restaurant near their home all work. A branded pen or diary rarely does.
What is a good gift for an executive director?
One piece of real quality, chosen for that person. A leather bag with their initials, a fountain pen or a bottle from a year that matters to them. Check what their company allows them to accept before you send it.
What are cool corporate gifts?
The ones that do not look like corporate gifts. People keep a gift that carries their own initials and leave the one that carries a large company logo in a drawer.
How much should a company spend on a corporate gift?
Set the budget by the relationship. Many companies work in three bands: under R500 a person for a wide list, R500 to R3,500 for clients and teams they know well, and R3,500 or more for a small number of people who matter most.
Are corporate gifts taxable in South Africa?
A gift from an employer to an employee is usually a taxable fringe benefit, and so is a gift voucher. A long service award of up to R16,000 in a tax year is not taxed after 15 unbroken years with the same employer. Ask your payroll team before you order, because the figures change.
When should I order year-end corporate gifts?
By the middle of October for anything made to order or personalised. Our own pieces need two months from the day you approve the order, so gifts for 15 December 2026 must be approved by 15 October 2026.
Can a gift carry our company logo?
Yes, and smaller is better. On our pieces we apply a logo by debossing, foil embossing or laser engraving, and you approve a digital proof before production begins.
What is the most popular corporate gift?
We know of no reliable count, and we think popularity is a poor guide. An item given everywhere is one your recipient may already own. Start with the person, choose a category that suits how they work and live, and give one plain item of good quality.
What are some good corporate gift items?
A wool scarf, a card holder, a notebook with good paper, coffee or rooibos, a wooden serving board, dinner for two, a donation in the person's name or a subscription. Choose by the person, your amount for each person and the date it must arrive.
What are some classy corporate gift ideas?
In our view, single objects in natural materials with no visible logo: a wool scarf, a leather card holder, a ceramic bowl or a wooden serving board.
